What Are The Signs Of A Roof Leak?

A homeowner looks over their roof inspecting it for leaks.Roof leaks often start long before the water starts dripping into the living area of your home. Take some time to learn the most common signs of a roof leak, and you’ll be able to make repairs before major damage is done.

Uneven Roof Surface

Walk around the exterior of your home, looking at the general condition of the roof. It should appear relatively flat. If you see a major dip in one spot, it’s likely because water damage is making the wood underneath soft and pliable. Curling shingles might not be a sign of a roof leak on their own, but they’re definitely a sign of trouble. When the shingles aren’t lying flat, water can seep through the cracks.

Stains in the Attic

If you can, step into the attic and look closely at the underside of the roof. When a roof leaks, the water often leaves behind a tell-tale sign as it dries. In some cases, though, stains could be from an old leak that’s since been repaired. If you’re not sure, check the area on a rainy day.

Light Shining Through

While you’re up in the attic, note whether any small beams of sunlight are poking through the roof. Naturally, this means that there’s a small hole. When it rains, water will come through the roof as easily as the sunlight does.

Granules in the Gutters

Asphalt shingles are the most popular choice for roofing material. As they start to age, the small asphalt granules that protect the roof start to fall off. Usually, they’ll wash down the roof and out the gutter, so you’ll see a small pile of them near the downspout. Roofs tend to start leaking when these granules fall off. If you see these granules, it's time to plan for a new roof.
